hey i wanna build a track bike and im im wondering what frame size to get and a list of things i need to build?
i need a list of things i need for the bike like frame ad fork etc..and the sizing i am 5,8- 5,9 what size frame would i need?
I'm 5'7 and I ride a 54cm frame quite comfortably, but overall height alone does not determine what size you should ride. if you have no clue what sizes work for your body dimensions you should go into a store and at least stand over several different size frames and even better get them to size you for a frame (this will probably cost a few bucks for the service)
this brings us to the next question mark here, how much experience do you have working on bicycles? fixed gears are simple bikes but they are very unforgiving of mechanical mistakes. for example, on a freewheel bike if the chain suddenly binds because of poor workmanship you can still coast and stop as normal, on a fixed gear if the chain stops, the back wheel stops, the bike stops but YOU keep going, face first into the pavement (I've seen it happen)
parts list:
frame
fork
headset (and cups if you frame doesn't have them already)
stem (make sure to get the correct type and size for your fork)
handlebars
grips or bartape (not strictly necessary but good to have)
if riding in the streets:front brake, brake handle and cable
(yes, use a brake, especially if you're new to fixed gear)
wheels (don't need to be bought as a set but get the best rear wheel you can afford)
crankset
bottom bracket (make sure this is compatible with both your frame and your crankset)
chainring (again, must be compatible with the crank)
chainring bolts (make sure the length is correct for you selected crank/chainring combo)
pedals with clips and straps (or clipless pedals and shoes, up to you)
fixed cog and lockring
chain (make sure its the right width for your chainring and cog)
seatpost
saddle
Along with the more basic tools (wrenches, allen keys, screwdrivers, etc) there are a few specialized tools that you are going to have a lot of trouble without, buy or borrow these at a minimum:
chainbreaker
lockring wrench
chainwhip
chainring bolt spanner
if your fork isn't already attached to the frame you have a whole other set of problems, probably best to get a shop to install the fork but if you want to do it yourself you'll need a pipe cutter to cut the steer tube (measure 3 times, cut once) plus a large C-clamp and a couple of blocks of wood to press in the headset cups (if they're not already attached to the frame)
