I have a jump bike which i'm looking to make single speed how would i shorten the chain?
Dude, a chain tool is cheap, just get one and shorten the chain properly. The last thing you want is to have your chain break while you are accelerating for a jump and everyone starts laughing at you because you are a tool that wouldn't buy the right tool...

They have no springs or spring action like other tensioners. Heres the pitch: You have a standard bicycle with vertical dropouts meant for having a standard derailleur (i.e. 10 speed), and youve decided you want to scrap all that extra weight, maintenance and hassle and go single speed. Problem is, you have to tension the chain because vertical dropouts dont allow you to pull the chain tight. So this is one of the ways you can do it. Heres how it works: You put the black spacer on your wheel axle, and the silver screw goes where your old derailleur was. You tension the chain then tighten the silver screw to lock it in place.
