what is better in crank set for the front and the rear gear of the road bike?
please explain to me whats the different between the COMPACT - DOUBLE - TRIPLE crank set and the 50/34 chain ring etc. i cant get whats the difference between these three cranks. god its giving me a headaches.. please answers this question i really wanted to know. and also the 11-23 or 12-25 cog set... don't understand that things.
this might be funny but I'm a newbie in building and set-up for road bike. because i wanna challenge myself to build on.

First, let's talk about the front. The front gears are called chain rings. If you have two, you have a DOUBLE. If you have three, you have a TRIPLE. The size of the chain rings is specified by the number of teeth on the gear. The most common DOUBLE configuration is the big has 52 teeth and the small gear has 39. As you make the big gear larger, you get more speed and less power. This is good for going down hills. As you make the small gear smaller, you get more power and less speed. That is good for going up hills. The most common TRIPLE configuration is the big gear has 52 teeth, the middle gear has 39 teeth, and the smaller gear has 30 teeth. A COMPACT DOUBLE reduces the size of both chain rings to increase power with a small decrease in speed. The most common COMPACT DOUBLE configuration is the big gear has 50 teeth and the small gear has 34 teeth. Manufacturers claim that a COMPACT DOUBLE eliminates the need for a TRIPLE. Not all people agree with them.
Next, let's talk about the back. The back has a cluster of gears called cogs. The cluster of cogs is called a cassette. When numbers are given, they are the size of the smallest and largest cogs in the cassette. So, in a 12-25 the smallest cog has 12 teeth and the largest has 25 teeth. As you make the smallest cog smaller, you get more speed and less power. As you make the biggest cog larger, you get more power and less speed.
Most manufacturers make DOUBLES, COMPACT DOUBLES, and TRIPLES, but not across their entire product line. All manufacturers make a variety of cassettes.
My road bike has a 52-39-30 triple and a 12-27 cassette, just to give you a point of reference.
