Why does the safety switch trip the house out when using the dishwaher?
Dishwasher trips safety switch when plugged into kitchen outlet after about 15 mins into its cycle, but runs fine when plugged in via extention lead to another outlet. House trips regualry when our fridge was using a certain outlet in kitchen usually at arround 3 in the aftertnoon,but runs fine now we moved it. Then suddenly the fans and lights will trip!! I have had a guy look at it when installing our new split system aircon and he thought he fixed it for me but it still happens. The house is 5 years old. Will this be an easy prob to fix and expensive?

Ok.... you may have seperate problems here...
Lets start with the kitchen...
Usually, the kitchen appliances are given their own circuit breaker, for each unit... so, the fridge gets one breaker, the dishwasher gets one, etc..... This is because all these units can draw more amps than the breaker will allow, if they all happen to 'peak' at the same time. If the fridge peaks at 13, and the dishwasher at 10... that will trip a 15, or 20 amp breaker, if they happen to draw at the same time (peak amps are normally pulled when a motor is started, so its most likely to happen when one of them 'kicks in', while the other is running)
Also in the kitchen (and bath), there should be GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt) outlets over the counters. These are required by code for any electrical outlet placed near water. I also use them on any outside outlets. These things are VERY sensitive, and will trip even under normal loads of most items that draw anything near their limit (like a fridge, dishwasher, or even many vacuum cleaners... or saws, hehehe)
A GFCI circuit can be either a GFCI outlet, or have regular outlets run to a GFCI breaker. The GFCI outlet will have a "Test" and "Reset" button on them. A GFCI breaker will have a white pigtail running from the breaker to the neutral/ground inside the circuit box.....it will also have a label on it, you can read without removing the faceplate to the circuit panel.
If you are trying to run appliances on a GFCI outlet over the kitchen counter, it will most likely trip it. It's best to move these items onto their own circuit.
As to the 'rest of the house'.... most household 'circuits' are set up to run 15 amps....if you have items plugged into a circuit that will draw more, it will trip the breaker. A 'circuit' can be just wall outlets, or in many cases, the lights and wall outlets in a particular room, or rooms. Some folks will have a few lights on a circuit, and then put the wall outlets for each room on different circuits. If you look in the circuit panel....it should be labeled. I say 'should', because this is often an overlooked task, lol. In a home that is only 5 years old, you should be able to safely change a 15 amp breaker for a 20 amp, if you find that circuit is tripping. When in doubt, call an electrician. The wire running a 20 amp circuit needs to be 12 gauge, and some home builder/manufacturers will use a lighter 14 guage wire to run the majority of circuits because it is a less expensive wire. When I'm running circuits I use only the 12 gauge for outlets, and lights, so its not a concern...costs a bit more up front, but I figure its worth it.
A typical breaker only costs about $15. A typical GFCI outlet runs about $14.
If youve never worked with electricity, its best to hire a professional. Dont be afraid to get estimates from at least a couple of them, and check their references.
